Where is Highlands Ranch, Colorado? Highlands Ranch is located in Douglas County and is a southern suburb of Denver, located roughly along and south of C-470 between Santa Fe on the west and I-25 on the east Map of Highlands Ranch
What is Highlands Ranch's History? In 1979 development began in what is today known as Highlands Ranch. It was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803! Highlands Ranch was owned by Lawrence Phipps Jr. between 1937 and 1979. In 1979 it was sold and developed by Mission Viejo Company and the first homes sold in July 1981. Residents began moving into The Ranch that same year. In 1997, J.F. Shea Co , a parent company of Shea Homes, purchased the community and Highlands Ranch remains today as a Metro District, an unicorporated area under the jurisdiction of Douglas County.
Is Highlands Ranch a City or a Town? Highlands Ranch is a Metro District, a Special Metropolitian District formed to provide several municipal services to The Ranch, such as water, sewage, highways, installation and maintenance of common property landscaping as well as development and maintenance of the District's park and trail system. The population is approaching 95,000 GREAT people!
Is Highlands Ranch Divided into Areas Other Than Neighborhood Subdivisions? Yes, Highlands Ranch is divided into four quadrants, Northridge, Southridge, Eastridge, and Westridge. Each builder built both traditional and comtemporary style homes. Because of the rolling terrain in Highlands Ranch it is not uncommon to find huge walk-out basements and homes that back to parks and open space; many with sweeping mountain views. The following is a breakout of The Ranch's areas:

Southridge Subdivisions in Southridge include Firelight, The Hearth, The Overlook, Back Country, Weatherstone, Forest Glenn, Sundance, Indigo Hill, Kentley Hills and Stonebury. Some of the home builders were Sanford Homes, Berkley Homes, Joyce Homes, Ryland Homes, Shea Homes and Virden Homes.
Southridge Amenities and Schools Village Center at Highlands Ranch boast several commercial retail stores and shops. Many Churches and Houses of Worship and Wildcat Mountain Reserve is located in Southridge. Douglas County public schools in Southridge are Bear Canyon Elementary, Saddle Ranch Elementary and Mountain Vista High School.
Eastridge Subdivisions include Firelight, Gleneagles. Gleneagles is unque from other Highlands Ranch communities in that it is a 55 and over community. Shea Homes, Storck Homes and Richmond American Homes were the primary builders.
Eastridge Amenities and Schools Highlands Ranch Post Office, Highlands Ranch Eastridge Recreation Center many Churches and Houses of Worship, Day Care facilities, many retail stores and restaurants as well as The Links Golf Course. Northridge Subdivisions in Northridge include Pembrooke, Province Center, Richmond Pointe, Summer Hill, and Timberline Ridge. The builders were Sanford Homes, Richmond American Homes, DR Horton Homes, U.S. Home, and Writer Homes.
Northridge Amenities and Schools AMC Highlands Ranch Centura Health Care Plaza, Highlands Ranch Business Park, 24 Theaters, many Churches and Houses of Worship, several Day Care centers, and because Northridge is nearer to C-470 and the Park Meadows Mall you will find numerous restaurants and retail shops. Douglas County public schools located in Northridge are Cougar Run Elementary, Sand Creek Elementary, and Northridge Elementary. Private schools include Highlands Ranch Christian school and Platte River Academy Charter school.
Westridge Subdivisions include Copperfield, The Villages, Carlyle Park, Westridge Knolls, Birkdale, Turnbury, Westridge Pointe, Indigo Hills, Spring Hill, Highlands Ranch Golf Club, Impressions and Mansion Pointe. Are There Any Off-leash Dog Areas in Highlands Ranch?
The Metro District offers four dog off-leash areas, located around the community, so dogs can exercise, socialize, and run off leash. Dog off leash facilities are located at:
Hound Hill at Highland Heritage Park, south of the Quebec/University/Lincoln intersection south of the Post Office. Parking is available at Highland Heritage Regional Park.
Digger's at Dad Clark Park at 3385 Asterbrook Circle, west of Fairview Parkway and Summit View Parkway. Parking is available at Dad Clark Park.
Fido's Field at Foothills Park, at 1042 Riddlewood Drive. Lucent Boulevard, turn south on Timbervale Trail to Riddlewood. It can also be accessed from Winterthur Way, west of Broadway. Parking is available at Foothills Park
Rover's Run at Redstone Park located east of Redstone Park, near the intersection of Town Center Drive and Foothills Canyon Boulevard. Parking is available at the Redstone Park Tennis Center.

The Highlands Ranch Metro District owns and maintains an impressive network of outdoor recreation amenities. With 22 parks, more than 70 miles of trails, and 2,000 acres of natural open space areas, Highlands Ranch is home to active people and a diverse wildlife population. In fact, 85 percent of homes in Highlands Ranch are located within one quarter mile of a park, open space area or trail. Our community has approximately 25 acres of park land per one thousand residents.
In addition, there are two skate parks, an outdoor inline hockey rink, four dog off-leash areas, eight lighted public tennis courts, three lighted ball fields, an historic park and three community gardens.
The Backcountry Wilderness Area (formerly known as OSCA), is a wonderful place to hike and view nature.
